Broadcast sustainability is moving from conference-panel talk to day-to-day operational practice — and BroadView Software is giving the industry a shared vocabulary for it. Beginning in August 2026, BroadView launches the Sustainability Word of the Month, a year-long program that pairs one sustainability concept each month with the realities of broadcast, cable, and radio operations.
The program debuts with its first featured word: Collaboration. Over twelve months it works through Efficiency, Stewardship, Circularity, Transparency, Innovation, Resilience, Conservation, Collaboration, Accountability, Optimization, Awareness, and Commitment — a working vocabulary for an industry under real pressure to reduce its environmental footprint.
Why Broadcast Sustainability Needs a Shared Language
The idea borrows from the “character trait of the month” programs that schools and civic groups have used for decades: build shared values one concept at a time. Applied to media technology, the same approach addresses a practical problem — sustainability conversations stall when two engineers, a facilities lead, and a CFO all mean different things by the same word.
“No organization can solve sustainability alone,” said Michael Atkin, President/CEO/CEO. “We chose Collaboration as our opening word because meaningful environmental progress requires the entire broadcast industry working together — sharing best practices, establishing common standards, and building a greener future side by side.”
“When we talk about circularity in equipment lifecycle management, or resilience in infrastructure design, or transparency in environmental reporting, we’re giving our industry the vocabulary to turn good intentions into measurable action,” said Mia Andrews, Chief Marketing Officer, BroadView Software. “These aren’t abstract ideas — they’re practical concepts that broadcasters, engineers, and technology partners encounter every day.”
Regulators and buyers are both applying pressure. European public broadcasters are reporting against national climate targets, large advertisers increasingly ask for carbon data alongside audience data, and procurement teams now expect technology vendors to document their own environmental practices. A shared vocabulary makes those conversations faster: when a broadcaster asks a supplier about circularity or accountability, both sides should already agree on what is being measured.
It is also a way to keep sustainability visible in months when nothing dramatic is happening. Twelve words, twelve short reads, one concept at a time — a rhythm that operations teams can actually follow between budget cycles and equipment refreshes.
August’s Word: Collaboration
Collaboration highlights how manufacturers, broadcasters, and industry bodies are working together to cut the environmental impact of media operations. Shared infrastructure, co-located facilities, and joint frameworks such as the DPP’s Committed to Sustainability programme are accelerating progress that no single company could deliver alone.
BroadView has practiced that approach for years, working with NAB, IBC, IAMT, The DPP, The Media Collective, and Caretta Research — and as a DPP Committed to Sustainability company.
What Each Month Will Cover
Each monthly feature connects its word to specific broadcast and media workflows:
- Efficiency — reducing energy consumption in playout, transmission, and data centre operations
- Circularity — extending equipment lifecycles instead of replacing hardware on a fixed cycle
- Conservation — protecting the resources media operations depend on, from power to bandwidth
- Optimization — refining scheduling and content delivery so fewer resources move the same content
- Accountability — turning sustainability targets into reported, auditable results
The twelve-month arc closes in July 2027 with Commitment — the thread that ties every other concept together.
Sustainability and Broadcast Management Software
For broadcasters, much of the environmental story is operational. Centralized broadcast management software reduces duplicated systems, cuts manual rework, and lets teams run linear, on-demand, and FAST channels from one platform instead of several. Cloud-based scheduling lowers on-premise hardware demand, and better data means fewer make-goods, fewer reruns of failed workflows, and less wasted capacity.
That is the connection the Sustainability Word of the Month program is built to make explicit: efficient software is quietly a sustainability tool. More on BroadView’s own environmental commitments is on our Sustainability page.
Follow the Program
A new word arrives each month, with a short written exploration connecting the concept to real-world broadcast and media applications. Follow BroadView on LinkedIn or watch this blog for each installment — and if your organization would like to feature a word alongside us, we would welcome the collaboration.
Broadcast sustainability will not be solved by a vocabulary list. But naming things precisely is how industries move from intention to measurement — and measurement is where real reductions begin.
